There are four types of shapes to choose from: asymmetrical D-shape, regular D-shape, pearl shape, and oval shape. 

Asymmetrical D shape carabiners are the most common and popular types around. They have a large gate opening and are strong and lightweight. Pear shape carabiners are ideal for clipping in ropes and gear. These are designed specifically for belaying or rappelling. D shape carabiners are the strongest shape available.
